Old furniture may no longer have a place in your property but that doesn’t mean the dumpster is their only option. Now that the holidays are over and the new gifts have been opened, your unwanted stuff is an opportunity to share your blessings.

Instead of tossing it in the trash, why not donate those pieces instead? You get to clear away some clutter and make someone else’s holiday that much better.

Why should I donate used furniture?

As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. When it comes to your old stuff, you can take this literally.

Many charities and nonprofits can still make use of your unwanted stuff to help their cause. And it doesn’t stop there. Your contributions can benefit you directly as well.

You’re probably aware that what you donate to charity can be deducted to your taxes. But it doesn’t have to be a cash donation. The value of the used furniture you give away counts towards that tax write-off as well. Check out the Salvation Army’s Donation Value Guide to get an idea of the deductible value you can earn.

What kind of furniture can I give away?

If your office is upgrading its facilities, you may have to offload some furniture. Your used chairs, sofas, office tables, cabinets, etc., can find new homes as long as they’re in relatively good condition.

There are times, however, when the furniture you want to get rid of doesn’t qualify for donation. It’s easy to tell when that’s the case – just ask yourself if you can still use the piece you want to give away.

Does it look like that chair will fall apart if someone sits on it? What about the fabric? Is the upholstery all torn up? Will that wobbly shelf even make it to the front door?

Questions like these are what you need to think about when deciding where the furniture should be headed. If the items are in what is called a “serviceable condition,” meaning it may not look the best but it’s still usable and functional, then they’re definitely candidates for donations. Otherwise, it’s time to retire them (preferably at the recycling center).

Where can I drop off my stuff?

There are several organizations that accept serviceable furniture donations. Many of them have drop-off locations across the country and can even pick up your items. Here are some of the most well-known.

Goodwill

If you have lightly used furniture you want to donate, Goodwill can help. These items will be sold at their Goodwill Stores and the profits will go on to fund their charity efforts. Check their website to find out if there are any drop-off centers near you or if they can pick it up at your place.

Salvation Army

Like Goodwill, the Salvation Army also resells donated furniture through their stores but they also send some pieces directly to homeless shelters. You can find a drop-off location or schedule a pick up through their dedicated donation website.

Habitat for Humanity

Their Habitat ReStores sell both new and used home improvement goods. These include donated furniture that helps fund the construction of Habitat homes both within their communities and worldwide. Find out how you can help here.

Charitable Organizations near You

Large organizations aren’t your only option. Check with your local homeless shelter, women’s shelter, church, or schools if they can use some of your old furniture. If they’re willing to take it off your hands, see if you can also make arrangements to have the items delivered.
